The fantastic Breitling Jet Team put on a spectacular performance in Singapore recently in the team’s first ever visit to the island republic. A crowd of 15,000, estimated by the organizers, took in the aerobatics show at Siloso Beach, Sentosa. Aerobatics is like aerial dancing for planes, with formation flying marked by precision and careful timing. The seven jets of the Breitling Jet Team performed for 20 minutes, putting together routines involving tight formations and high-speed passes; seen during the show were technically challenging maneuvers such as the Apache Roll and Vertical Split. For those who wonder why a Swiss watchmaker such as Breitling is involved here, well, the story goes like this: Breitling has long been tied with aviation, as seen in its association with pilot (and occasional actor) John Travolta and via its role as the official watch of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). In fact, the relationship with AOPA, the world’s largest pilots’ association, stretches back to the 1950s.
